Maintaining the proper amount of tire pressure is important for ensuring that your tires perform how they were designed to perform. Having over-inflated or under-inflated tires both carry their own risks and performance drawbacks.
Having over-inflated tires makes your tires more sensitive to the road. This means that hitting a pothole or running over debris in the road carries a much higher risk of damaging or popping your tire.
Under-inflated tires carry their own set of risks as well. For starters it results in more tire coming in contact with the road than the tire was designed for, which can lead to your tires wearing down faster and reducing their overall lifespan. Under-inflation also causes your engine to work harder to push the car forward which can reduce your vehicle’s fuel economy. It’s important to keep in mind that as the weather changes, your tire pressure will react and over time your tires will also lose pressure. For these reasons it is important to check your tire pressure regularly.
While most air pumps have built-in pressure gauges, some may not. If you need a tire pressure gauge we have plenty in stock for you in our parts department. To find out what the proper amount of tire pressure is for your vehicle check the sticker found on the inside of your driver-side doorjamb or your car’s owner’s manual.
